Smartphone Buyers Guide

Smartphones -
A Buyers Guide

Looking for a new Smartphone? With a wide range to choose from our guide is designed to help you understand Smartphone technology and help you choose the right phone for you.

Smartphones have an advanced mobile operating system which combines features of a PC and that of a mobile device, such as a tablet. You can do nearly everything these days with such small devices from using it as a camera to browsing the web, playing games or keeping track of your appointments, not to forget texting or using the latest apps.

The Operating System

There are 4 major Smartphone operating systems to choose from Android, iOS, Blackberry and Windows phone. The Operating system manages both hardware and software to give you an enjoyable user experience. Choosing the OS is down to personal preference.

Medion smartphones use the Android operating system. Google enthusiasts will love this OS given that Google apps are deeply integrated. A big benefit of the Android OS is the availability of more than a million apps on the Google Play store and the customisable home screen where you can add widgets or choose as many or as few apps to display as you want.

Android processors come in various different application programming interface levels (API) starting from 1.5 cupcake to 5.0 Lollypop being the latest. Each released Android version makes something new possible. So the newer the version the more new features are available. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the newest version is the right one for you. It depends on what you want to do with your phone. For instance if you simply want to call and text then you won’t need the newest version.

The Processor (CPU)

The processor plays a major role in driving innovation from amazing visuals, latest cutting edge games, power saving technology, powerful graphics and performance of the next generation of mobile features.

Processor technology is not that straight forward but we will try to simplify this for you. Usually more is better and this is an easy formula to follow but in the case of processors more cores doesn’t necessarily mean it’s faster or more efficient. There are multiple factors that determine the efficiency of your processor. The important factors are CPU frequency, the software used and the Memory (RAM).

Processor technology is not that straight forward but we will try to simplify this for you. Usually more is better and this is an easy formula to follow but in the case of processors more cores doesn't necessarily mean it's faster or more efficient. There are multiple factors that determine the efficiency of your processor. The important factors are CPU frequency, the software used and the Memory (RAM).

The Memory (RAM)

Copious amounts of RAM isn't necessary when combined with a good operating system (but it helps!). Smartphone apps only use a small amount of RAM (50MB) which means lots of applications can run simultaneously. The OS may suspend apps that are not used at the time by freeing RAM up for other tasks. This is why Android phones appear to be running so smooth and responsive even when only having low amounts of RAM. Storing 3D games will use more RAM but usually 1GB RAM is more than sufficient to run these. For storage the more RAM the better is generally the case.

Removable Storage

Removable storage is classed as SD cards or microSD cards which will be slotted in to the smartphone. Android is the only OS that really supports removable storage at the moment. Other OS such as Apple's iOS do not include any method to expand storage and therefore restrict the user on the amount of photos, apps and games being stored considerably. Storage with SD cards can be extended up to 2GB and SDHC can increase the storage size up to 32GB. Another available option to increase storage is SDXC cards with an increase if 2TB but this is not availed for most smartphones.

Screen Size

Smartphones sizes vary and are available from the small screen 4,5 -4,9 inch, medium screen 5 -5.2 inch to the large screen of 5.3 inch and greater. If you use your phone for regular internet search and banking then a larger screen size would be recommended.
