High Performance Laptop Buyers Guide

If you’re looking for a multimedia laptop that can deliver an excellent computing experience – whether you want to play games, edit video or do some heavy-duty design work, then you need to consider a high performance laptop.

Essentially you’re looking for a laptop that can provide the accessibility of a full-blown desktop PC but with the convenience of a portable device - at an affordable price.

Finding the right high performance laptop can be tricky – especially with so much noise around different types of processors, RAM and hard drive capacity. We’ve tried to simplify things a bit with this useful guide to help you choose the right laptop for your needs.

Build Quality

When buying a high powered laptop it’s important to consider build-quality – especially if you plan on doing a lot of commuting. Equally – if your laptop is simply a device you can work on from home and rarely on the go then this is an important consideration.

Believe it or not when it comes to laptops - size does matter, however, it depends on how you intend to use it. If you require a fast laptop with a big screen then 17.3” HD laptops are ideal – especially if you don’t intend to do a lot of travelling or commuting with it. On the other hand – if you want a powerful laptop that is light and portable enough for travelling then you might want to consider laptops with a maximum screen size of 15.6” or below.

Processing Power

It really depends what you want to use your laptop for – if you need a device that requires a lot of multi-tasking or game play then you should look at a laptop with quad-core Intel Core i5 or i7 processor. These are recommended if you’re looking for a fast, high-performance laptop.

RAM – Memory

For heavy duty design work or applications and games that require speed then you should look at a minimum of 6GB RAM, however, for an optimum computing experience we recommend at least 8GB RAM to get the most out of your laptop.

Storage

Hard drives or solid state drives (SSD) are essential elements for your multimedia laptop. Whilst cloud storage is becoming more and more popular there is no real substitute for the ability to save and download files directly to your device.

Most laptops come with a minimum of 500GB – 750GB hard drive storage, however, if you’re using several applications and saving a lot of documents to your machine then 1TB hard drive storage is what many opt for.

Solid state drives are of course the other option – many devices utilise SSDs to store and run Windows 10 as they boot and run applications far faster than a standard hard drive. Many high performance laptops come with a minimum of 128GB SSD – quite meagre compared to hard drive capacity, however, for booting and loading Windows 10 and applications – it’s perfect.

Graphics

The majority of laptops come with integrated graphics – usually Intel HD, Intel Iris or an AMD Radeon equivalent. Whilst these graphics cards are fine every day, however, a dedicated graphics card would be more suitable for resource-demanding games and high definition video streaming.

Many of our high performance laptops come with a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce graphics card to support high definition game play, video streaming and design work.

Battery

A large battery is ideal if you plan on doing a lot of travelling but require the convenience of a computer whilst on the go. High performance laptops tend to have 2 – 3 different types of batteries (4-, 6- and a 9- cell). The more cells you buy – the longer the battery life. It really is that simple.

To Summarise…

In the end it really is down to personal choice – your choice, however, by considering the nature of what you want your laptop to do – this should help point you toward the ideal laptop. Paying a bit more for a decent processor, RAM, graphics card and storage could save you a lot of problems in the long-run.
